Scrap Metal or Trash? What to Check Before You Throw It Away
Before a Las Vegas garage cleanout goes to the trash, check for metal you can recycle.

On this page
Cleaning out a garage or replacing equipment often produces a familiar question: is this trash, or does it contain recyclable metal? Objects that look like a single item may be made from several materials, which makes the answer more complicated than a quick glance. Las Vegas Recycling (LVR) lists several metals among its recyclable categories and welcomes questions about specific items.
Look for the material, not just the object
A metal fence section, piece of shelving or length of pipe may contain aluminum, steel, copper, brass or a combination of materials. Knowing what the item is made from helps a recycler evaluate it. Knowing only its household purpose—"old grill" or "broken fixture"—may not be enough.
Check for obvious attachments such as plastic panels, wiring, glass or other nonmetal components. These do not necessarily make recycling impossible, but they can affect acceptance and handling.
Common examples worth asking about
Metal fencing and shelving may contain useful scrap metal after replacement or renovation. Pipes and fittings can include copper, brass or other materials. Barbecue grills often have metal bodies but may also include fuel connections and other components. Water heaters and appliances are especially important to verify because complete equipment can involve plumbing connections, electronics, insulation or regulated components.
These examples are intended to help identify *questions for the recycler*. They are not an item-by-item acceptance list for LVR.
Reuse and repair come before the scrap pile
Recycling is not the only option for an item that is no longer needed. If shelving or a household fixture remains usable, repair, resale or donation may extend its useful life. If it cannot be reused, separating the metal portion where safe and appropriate may make its material type clearer.
Never attempt to release refrigerants, dismantle pressurized equipment, disconnect fuel systems or open sealed components without qualified assistance. Safety takes priority over recovering a small amount of metal.
What LVR actually lists
LVR's website identifies aluminum, brass, copper and tin among the metals it buys, along with broader scrap recycling and pickup services. Its published list is useful as a starting point, but it is not a promise that every finished product made partly of metal will be accepted.
A call describing the item, its size, attachments and condition is the most reliable next step. Photographs can also help you explain what you have, if requested.
Frequently asked questions
Is an entire old grill accepted as scrap metal?
A complete grill is not automatically scrap. Tell us the type of grill and whether a propane tank or plastic parts are still attached.
What if an item contains both metal and plastic?
Mixed materials can require separate handling. Describe the item to LVR before bringing it to the yard.
Check Before You Toss It
If you have an item with recyclable metal, call or text LVR at 702-932-7620. Ask whether the particular item is accepted and whether drop-off or another service is appropriate.
